Search engine optimization (SEO) is improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site via search engine results. Basically what that means is, there are ways to tweak your site to make it more prominent and relevant to keywords on search engines, and ultimately get you more visitors.
After reading about SEO, here are a few things you might want to think about when making/editing your web site.
1. Content. It is important to effectively communicate the topic of your web site. Headlines and subheads should be informative, accurate and to the point. No one wants to read a novel just to be linked to your site. The same concept applies to tags, titles, categories, etc. Also make it interesting to your audience, and update frequently to keep them coming back.
2. URL Structure. Let’s say you have a visitor who wants to share your web page with a friend…you’ve done this before. You’re in class on two separate computers and you start to yell out the URL to them. You know how frustrating it is once you get to the part with all the numbers and symbols.”.html?s=00086&e%53290_11345e=4.” …was that 3 zeros or 4?…11345 or 11435? Simple, short words are the way to go.
3. Think of your visitors. Make it easy for users to get from one page to another with navigation tools. Use internal links at the top of your site so that visitors can quickly go back to the home page, or previous postings without having to click back a million times. Use images, links, etc. to keep them interested and create a visually appealing web page to draw them in.
4. Lastly, use analytic services. See how users reach your site, what posts are the most popular, and if your optimizations are making an impact with traffic.
